OUTLIVING YOUR MOTHER
For a man this adds on the years
too many tears
for the righteous who live
with their somnolent threatening clouds
on the horison
never to speak of it
the trial that comes with
breath.
It doesn’t come to one
it comes to lots
who don’t know it
but it makes the world
grey and cloud-stricken.
It is the death
that means more to you
than your wife’s feelings of insecurities
like the homespun rumours
of death or mourning do.
She brings life which lasts
longer than a gusty quip
Death takes her for longer
than a minnow knows
sheer water’s edge.
